Who's Behind BudgetSense

Matthew Harman, Founder of BudgetSense.co.uk

Matthew Harman

Founder & Author, BudgetSense.co.uk

Hi, I'm Matthew — and I've been quietly obsessed with personal finance for most of my adult life. Not in a spreadsheet-for-fun way (well, maybe a little), but in the way most people come to it: through necessity, curiosity, and a few early mistakes that turned out to be great teachers.

I've spent my career in standard employment, which means I've never had a fat bonus or a company pension that does the heavy lifting. Everything I've built financially — paying off a mortgage, building an ISA portfolio, learning to budget in a way that doesn't feel like punishment — has come from taking a genuine interest in how money works and applying it consistently over more than 30 years.

I've lived through recessions, interest rate swings, the rise of challenger banks, and the shift from cash ISAs to stocks and shares. I've made good calls and bad ones. I've learned what actually moves the needle and what's just noise.

BudgetSense exists because most personal finance content in the UK is either too basic, too product-pushy, or written by people who've never had to worry about money in the first place. I wanted to build something different — a genuinely useful resource written from the perspective of someone who's been in the same position as most of the people reading it.

Everything on this site reflects my honest view. I don't recommend anything I wouldn't use myself.
